The state liquor shop “Monopolis” stood at this location in the market square. A state monopoly on vodka existed in interwar Lithuania; only specialised state shops could sell vodka and spirits. Making vodka and other strong distilled alcoholic drinks for one’s own use was prohibited, and large fines were imposed on offenders. The specialised shops were open only for certain hours: 9–22 in district centres and 8–20 in other locations. Such shops were closed on important state holidays.
